WHAT IS JUDO?
Judo is an Olympic grappling martial art that focuses on using leverage, timing and technique rather than brute strength to control and throw an opponent. In training you’ll learn how to off‑balance someone, throw safely, and control them on the ground with holds and pins, all in a supervised environment. This makes judo ideal for building coordination, resilience and practical self‑defence skills for everyday life.
At High Rollers Canberra we run dedicated judo classes for kids, teens and adults in a friendly, inclusive community setting. Our timetable includes beginner‑friendly sessions clearly marked so new students can start with a strong technical foundation before progressing to more live practice and randori. We are a proud member of the , with programs ranging from adult beginners to competition‑focused training.

WHAT YOU'LL LEARN
In judo you’ll start with the fundamentals that keep training safe and effective: learning to fall properly (ukemi), basic grips, stance and movement.
From there you progress into standing throws, trips and sweeps, along with ground positions, pins and transitions that help you control an opponent on the mat.
Classes mix technique instruction, drilling and controlled practice so you can build real skill while staying within your own comfort and experience level.

JUDO COMMUNITY AND J-GIRLS
At High Rollers Canberra, judo is built around community, commitment and long‑term development—not just classes on a timetable. We’re proud to be a hub for judo in Canberra, bringing together kids, teens, adults, competitors and parents who all value respect, hard work and looking after each other on the mats.
Our commitment to judo goes beyond regular training. High Rollers is the only club in Canberra that runs the J‑Girls program, a national Judo Australia initiative designed to encourage and support girls and women into the sport. It’s one example of how seriously we take growing judo, especially for female athletes.
We also have three national judo champions training out of High Rollers, and our head judo coach is a former high‑level competitor with world‑class experience. She is an International Judo Federation (IJF) –accredited coach, and one of the only IJF‑accredited judo coach based in Canberra. That combination of community focus and elite coaching means you can train in a welcoming environment while knowing the standards on the mat are genuinely high.

FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS
Most kids can start judo from around age 5, depending on coordination and ability to follow instructions. If you’re unsure, contact us and we can recommend the best class.
Yes. We teach safe falling (ukemi), use age‑appropriate drills and closely supervise all contact, so students can learn judo in a controlled, progressive way. Beginners start with fundamentals and technical drilling before moving into more live sparring.
An added bonus at High Rollers is our sprung floors, which are not a common feature in Canberra. Our mats sit on a sprung sub‑floor, meaning the impact of throws is absorbed more effectively and feels noticeably easier on the body, especially for kids and newer students.
