High Rollers Canberra is buzzing – we’ve got a new judo head coach on the mats, and she’s pretty special. Please welcome Tomomi Sensei to the High Rollers family.
Why we’re excited about Tomomi
Tomomi was born and raised in Japan, the home of judo and the country that consistently produces the highest level of judo in the world, so the calibre of her judo background is second to none. She pretty much lives and breathes judo – she went to high school specifically for judo, led her university judo team, and even worked for a Japanese company as part of its professional judoka team. Around the club, Tomo brings that rare combo of real-world experience and super clean technique, delivered in a chilled, friendly way that fits our vibe.
She’s also one of those coaches who can spot the tiny details that change everything – a grip here, a step there – and explain it in a way that actually makes sense after a long day at work or school. Whether she’s working with beginners or more experienced students, it’s clear how much she cares about helping people improve.
Awesome with kids (and parents)
If you’ve got kids on the mats, they’re in good hands. Tomo genuinely loves working with kids and teens – she’s patient, positive and knows how to keep classes fun while still sneaking in all the good stuff like discipline, balance and confidence.
Parents can expect:
- Classes where kids are safe, engaged and moving the whole time.
- A good mix of games, drills and proper judo.
- Tired, happy kids who want to come back.
Not just for competitors
Yes, Tomo has serious competition chops, but her coaching is absolutely not “hardcore only”. Whether you’re here to get fitter, learn some self defence, build confidence, or just try something new with a friendly crew, you’ll fit right in with her running the class.
Under her guidance, classes will cater to:
- People who just want a fun, social way to train.
- Adults chasing better fitness and mobility.
- Kids and teens building resilience and self defence skills.
- Students who might eventually want to jump into comps (no pressure).
Everyone trains at their own pace – no one gets left behind, and no one gets held back.
A win for Judo at High Rollers and the ACT
Having a coach like Tomomi Sensei in Canberra is a big deal for judo at High Rollers and in the ACT, even if the vibe stays relaxed and welcoming. With her Japanese judo upbringing, years of study and leadership in judo through school and university, professional judoka experience, technical knowledge, coaching background and easygoing personality, High Rollers Canberra is an awesome place to start or level up your judo, whether your goal is medals, movement, or just a better version of yourself.
If you’ve been thinking about trying judo (or getting the kids into it), now’s a pretty great time to jump in and meet her on the mats.
