What is Judo?
Judo is a fun and exciting martial art where you learn how to use your body to move and control your opponent. An Olympic sport, it's all about being smart and quick, not just strong!
The Basics of Judo
Here are some important things to know about judo:
1. The Gi - Judokas wear a special outfit called a "gi." It’s usually white or blue and is made of strong fabric. The gi helps you grip and hold onto your opponent during practice and matches.
2. Balance - In judo, balance is super important! You need to stay steady on your feet while also trying to make your opponent lose their balance. If you can do this, you can throw them!
3. Techniques- Judo at High Rollers has different techniques or moves you can learn. Here are a few:
- Throws: These are moves where you lift or push your opponent to make them fall. It’s like a gentle tumble!
- Holds: Once you have your opponent on the ground, you can hold them down to win the match.
- Joint Locks: These moves help you control your opponent by gently bending their arms or legs in a way that makes it hard for them to move.
- Chokes: These are special techniques that can make your opponent tap out, which means they give up because they can’t breathe easily. But don’t worry, they’re done safely!
4. Respect and Discipline - In judo, you learn to respect your teachers and your training partners. You bow to each other before and after matches to show this respect. You also learn discipline, which means you practice hard and follow the rules.

Why Judo at High Rollers?
Judo at High Rollers has been intelligently adapted for today’s world, striking the perfect balance between modern training and the core teachings of Jigoro Kano, the founder of Judo. While we enjoy competition and sport, our approach ensures that self-defence remains at the heart of our curriculum. Many recent sporting rules can sometimes change the focus—for example, rolling onto your stomach may be a valid escape in competition, yet it’s not ideal for real-world self-defence. At High Rollers, we address these differences, teaching practical skills that work both on the mat and beyond.
Whether you want to build confidence, make new friends, or learn how to protect yourself, our Judo program prioritizes fun, fitness, and real-life resilience. Join us for an adventure that respects tradition, embraces progress, and keeps self-defence at the centre of everything we do.
